Finalists Announced at Voice Edition of Concours de Genève
The three finalists are 25-year-old mezzo-soprano Barbara Skora, 29-year-old baritone Jungrae Noah Kim, and 28-year-old soprano Chelsea Marilyn Zurflüh.
On October 22, each of the three finalists will perform 3 opera arias with the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, conducted by Alevtina Ioffe.
The live semi-final round comprised three sections: an opera recital, a lieder recital, and a proposal for a personal artistic project.
The First Prize is valued at 20,000 CHF, while Second Prize is 12,000 CHF and Third Prize is 8,000 CHF.
In 2024, the jury comprises Patricia Petibon (Chair), Aviel Cahn, André Comploi, Jean Denes, Sophie de Lint, and Waltraud Meier.
Founded in 1939, the Concours de Genève is one of the world’s leading international music competitions. More than 800 artists have passed through the competition over the course of its history. Each year two disciplines are offered in rotation, choosing from piano, flute, oboe, clarinet, cello, viola, string quartet, voice, percussion, and composition.

Is GTG a battleground for social issues?

As a human right advocate and a humanitarian aid worker, I am captivated by the ability of art to shape societies, foster well-being, bring peace and weave the threads of healing into the very fabric of humanity. My own exploration now converges with a powerful voice in the field, Aviel Cahn, the Director of the Grand Theatre de Geneve (“GTG”).
In this interview, I embark on a journey with Cahn, delving into the transformative potential of opera in the forthcoming GTG production ‘Justice.’ In our conversation, I seek to unravel the balance between high art and social responsibility under Cahn’s direction. Against the backdrop of real-life societal challenges, ‘Justice’ stands as an unnerving (but for the moment blank) canvas for testing this balance.
In exploring the potential of opera as a catalyst for social change, Cahn quickly and categorically rejects the notion of opera as an exclusive sanctuary for high art. In his words, “a sanctuary is too untouchable. GTG is a place to live and encounter. It shouldn’t be a holy ground.
