    Not long ago Hakeem went to the riot torn areas in Aluthgama, Beruwala and cried tears when he saw the plight of Muslims who were caught up in a frenzy of violence not seen since 1983. Homes and commercial enterprises belonging to them were destroyed by a mob let loose by the Bodu Bala Sena.

    Three Muslims and a Tamil, working as a ‘watcher’, at a Muslim owned poultry farm were slain for no reason other than the fact they belonged to what in Sri Lankan ‘democratic’ politics is called ‘minorities’.

    Millions wort of properties was destroyed. Some Sinhalese also suffered heavy losses. A lawyer family friend of mine had her house set on fire. She had built this house with her life savings. Mercifully the government had built it for her again and she told us it is now better than what it was. I am happy for her and her family.

    Mosques were attacked and copies of the Qur’an were burned just for the heck of it.

    The homes and shops of Muslims have also been rebuilt from what we hear. But the dead will not return and the scars will take a long time to heal. Maybe it will take a generation.     Abdul Rauff Hibbathul Hakeem (born 13 April 1960) is a Sri Lankan politician and current member of parliament, representing the Kandy electorate since 2010. Hakeem is the leader of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC), and a member of the United National Front for Good Governance.

    Early life and education

    Hakeem was born 13 April 1960 in Nawalapitiya in Kandy District.[1][2] He was educated at Royal College, Colombo[2][3][4] and attended the Sri Lanka Law College, taking oath as an attorney-at-law.[5] He later gained a LL.M. degree from the University of Colombo.[2]

    Hakeem met M. H. M. Ashraff, the founder and leader of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC), whilst working at Faisz Musthapha's law chambers.[6]

    Hakeem joined the SLMC in 1988.[1] He served as general-secretary of the party from 1992 to 2000 and represented it at the All Party Conference from 1991 to 1993.[5] Prior to the 1994 parliamentary election, the SLMC entered into an electoral pact with main opposition People's Alliance (PA).[7]
