Breast cancer is one of women's biggest fears. But Noreen Fraser's story proves that even the scariest nightmare can lead to amazing success.
Fraser, a television producer (of Entertainment Tonight, for one!), had been religious about mammograms, but one day in 2001, the then 47-year-old found a lump somewhere between her breast and her shoulder -- just above the invisible line where the mammogram's imaging stops. She was sure it was nothing, but she decided to be safe and have it checked out, and it turned out to be breast cancer. Fraser then had a lumpectomy and radiation.
"The statistics suggested that if I did those two things, there would be a 96 percent chance it wouldn't come back, so I felt safe, and there seemed to be no need to do chemo," Fraser says. "But of course, I was in the four percent -- it came back and metastasized to my bones."
That meant Fraser was officially considered stage four and incurable. "Technically I was lucky, because it was only in one spot, on my thigh, and they radiated it. Everything was hunky dory for five or six years, but there were definitely dark days -- you know something could pop up at any moment."
